The Get-Paid Or Quit Plight Of Working Mothers

This article outlines the problems that follow childbirth with working mothers. Every family awaits the birth of a new born to complete the circle. While the presence of a baby is all hunky dory to think of, there are several challenges that working mothers face.

Working mothers are faced with different challenges while bringing up children, even more new mothers. The threat of losing their jobs and hence an extra income in this fast paced world does little in helping working mothers and their families. Most private companies do not follow pregnancy related laws to encourage parenthood and personal lives.

“I have worked in a software company for the last 2 years and was made to quit my job because I had to leave an hour early to tend to my 3 month old” (Meesha, 29)

“My 4 month old is sick and with the maid. I couldn’t even use my phone in the office to check on her. I had to quit, I had no choice” (Sarika 31)

Taking matters into your own hands and dealing with abuse can have detrimental effects on your career as well, some say. Gone are the days when a mother’s longsuffering was within a home and went unnoticed.

The so called freedom that the society has provided for working mothers, today comes with strings attached. Working mothers are now turning back to staying in the home and tending to their children and families. While others manage to stretch their longsuffering to workplaces and sacrifice their time with growing babies, there is a list of different forms of accusations to face!

“How can you leave your baby with the maid?”

“Your child is so unruly, you should have spent more time with him when he was a baby”

“If you were there with me as a child, I would not have been taken advantage of”

“Who are we kidding here? Freedom for a woman lasts for as long as she is single. The minute she is married, its back to the basics of life. ”

Ladies, we encourage you today:

  • Take your stand.
  • You are free.
  • Do not cave into the pressures of society.
  • Stay confident that you can embrace your individuality always. Don’t allow anyone’s opinion to affect you.
  • The sacrifices you make or don’t make as a mother is one between you and your family.
  • An abusive workplace is no different from an abusive relationship. Treat them both aggression and stand up for the right thing.
